The venue of the conference is Empa in St. Gallen, Switzerland. St. Gallen's linen-based textile industry dates back to the 15th century.

During the industrial revolution it played a pioneering role in the mechanization of the textile industry. It became known for its embroideries, which still enjoy an international reputation.

St. Gallen is the center of Eastern Switzerland, situated between historic Appenzell and picturesque Lake of Constance. Its old town with the Cathedral and Abbey’s Library has been declared a UNESCO world heritage site.
